Gunbower Island features two significant forest areas. The Gunbower State Forest is located to the north and accessible from Koondrook, while the Gunbower National Park is to the south and accessible from Cohuna.

Embark on an exciting canoe trail adventure along Gunbower Creek, south-east of Koondrook, where the pristine waters meander through the stunning Gunbower State Forest, creating the breathtaking Safes Lagoon—a thriving wetland teeming with diverse aquatic life.
The well-marked 5km return trail, easily navigated with yellow floating buoy markers, offers a leisurely two-hour paddle — perfect for a half-day nature escape.
The wetland is an environmental showpiece and if lucky you may see platypus in the tranquil waters.
Birds such as sea eagles, ibis, spoonbills and herons can often be seen along with smaller kingfishers, parrots and swallows.
Spot sun-loving freshwater turtles lounging on fallen logs, while iconic Australian wildlife—including kangaroos, emus, and elusive black wallabies—frequent the lagoon's lush banks.
The wetlands are also home to many native fish such as Murray cod, golden perch, yellowbelly, silver perch and native Australian catfish.
Venture into the forest to encounter impressive metre-long goannas, agile lizards, and the mesmerising carpet python, its intricate camouflage a testament to nature's artistry.
