Member for Northern Victoria Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell has used the return of parliament to slam the Allan Government’s failure to properly maintain Victoria’s regional roads.
In her notice of motion, Ms Tyrrell said under the current government, Victoria had some of the worst road conditions in Australia.
“Nearly every day a constituent contacts my office complaining about a dangerous road that has been neglected for repair by the state government,” Ms Tyrrell said.
“As the member of the biggest electorate geographically, my constituents are driving on unsafe roads all over northern Victoria... from the Alpine region to Mildura.”
In the motion, Ms Tyrrell reminded the government of its $964 million commitment to repairing Victorian roads as announced in the 2024-25 Victorian Budget and that $675 million of that funding would be specifically spent on repairing regional roads.
In welcoming the long-awaited investment, Ms Tyrrell said the motion called on the pending repair works to be of the highest quality and standard, delivering Victorians world-class road infrastructure.
“There is anecdotal evidence that previous works completed on our roads have been substandard, with many roads needing new repairs after only a short period of time,” Ms Tyrrell said.
“Now that the government had provided funding to repair our roads, it is imperative that they are not only fixed but fixed to the highest possible standard.”
The motion will be voted on by members of the Legislative Council in two weeks’ time.
