Eastern zone schools started back last week, and St Michael’s School Deniliquin was the first of the western zone schools to go back this week.
While public school students returned yesterday, the St Micahel’s school grounds came alive again from Tuesday.
Among those with the biggest smiles were the new Kindergarten students, who will attend school part time for the first five weeks of term.
“The kids have the first five Wednesdays off, which just helps with their transition and gives them a break in the middle of the week,” said teacher Lily Bond, who will educate the children alongside fellow Kindergarten teacher Sally Kew.
Like most first days of school, there were both laughter and tears.
“It’s funny because the parents were more emotional than the kids; the kids were very excited to be at school and get to wear their uniforms,” Ms Bond said.
“We have a tea or coffee type of catch up in the office following school drop off, just to get the parents out of the class and get started with kids learning.”
Also helping the school’s youngest students adjust to ‘big school’ will be Kindergarten classroom support staff, Melissa Westcott and Sophie Dudley.
The school has 25 Kindergarten students joining them this year, which Ms Bond pointed out was predominantly female.
While still early days, Ms Bond said the children seem to be acclimatising well.
“It's been quite a successful transition for the kids to primary school.
“I really am looking forward to seeing their growth across the year.”
