He’s been a fixture of the brigade for 12 years, with his medal recognising his first 10 years of service.
It was presented in person last week, by Zone Commander Stewart Alexander.
“It feels pretty special. I am sure plenty of others have this, but I am proud of myself to be presented the medal.
“I actually thought I was getting in trouble.
“I was called up to the front of the room while a recruiting drive was taking place.
“I then got a surprise when I figured out I wasn’t in trouble.”
But medals, thanks, praise and gratification are not why Iggy chose to become a firefighter.
“It is just a secondary job for me, not in a diminished way, but it is my second job that allows me to help the community where I can,” he said.
“The best part has been the enjoyment of that; being able to help, the people you help and meet as well as the teams and people you get to work with.”
Any firefighter you speak to says while the role of the firefighter can be a challenging one, the new skills, lifelong friendships and the chance to really help in your own community make it worthwhile.
Active recruitment is taking place for both the the Jerilderie and Finley NSW Fire + Recue brigades.
