According to a recent study by BizCover, a business insurance comparison site, Indian food takes the metaphorical cake as the city’s most popular cuisine.
With over 33,000 annual searches, dishes such as biryani, tandoori chicken and various curries are clear community favourites.
Close behind, English cuisine, such as fish and chips and roast dinner, dished up about 23,000 annual searches.
Third was Thai food, which amassed about 16,500 annual searches for its to-drool-for dishes of tom yum, som tum and pad thai.
This data revealed more than just the budding tastes of the community, though.
BizCover head of marketing Sharon Kenny said understanding what people liked to eat presented a significant business opportunity.
“Whether it’s creating a menu full of Indian classics, starting a new Indian restaurant, or finding ways to reach Indian food lovers, knowing what (locals) like can help its businesses succeed,” she said.
And Shepparton isn’t the only city benefiting from this information.
To uncover nationwide preferences, BizCover studied the 30 most popular cuisines across 50 Australian cities.
The project analysed Google search data from over 11,000 keywords to identify the flavours and dishes Australians love most.
For Shepparton, the findings highlight a growing craving for Indian cuisine and an appetising opportunity for local businesses to cater to the community’s foodies.
Shepparton’s top 10 cuisines:
- Indian
- English
- Thai
- Italian
- Chinese
- Japanese
- Turkish
- Vietnamese
- American
- Korean
