The books were created by Angus Rae and Catie Michael as part of the school’s cultural program for Year 7, run in conjunction with Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre.
All students were tasked with writing a book using the Wamba Wamba language skills they have been learning.
Yarkuwa staff and volunteers assisted the children in translating and constructing their very own books.
Each contains educational stories written in both English and Wamba Wamba language.
Pronunciations of the indigenous language words and phrases are also included within the books.
At the end of the project, Catie’s book How Many Echidnas? and Angus’s book What Animal Is That? were chosen to be printed as part of the set.
The set consists of five books in total, and aim to teach the youth more about indigenous languages.
There have been 250 sets printed, which will be distributed to a number of local primary schools.
As a continuation of the Deni High cultural program, Year 7 students will later visit some of those schools for reading sessions using the book sets.
They will also impart some of the other knowledge they have been learning during the program with the younger students.
