The Youth Council provides a platform for young people to have their voices heard on key issues affecting them, and to offer advice on youth policies, services and initiatives. Members will also help plan and develop events that build engagement, leadership and a sense of community among Moira Shire’s youth.
Jordan said that he decided to get involved in the Moira Youth Council as he was personally reached out to and recommended by someone in the community.
“I wanted to work with other like-minded individuals and was hoping to become a better leader and listener,” Jordan said.
“I am hoping to get what young people want in the Moira Shire to make sure their voices are heard.”
When asked about his aspirations for the future, Jordan said he wants to finish school and head to university and do something sport, maths or science related.
“The issues across the Shire, or in Yarrawonga specifically, that are particularly important to me are young people having their voice heard,” Jordan said.
“I want to help to be a voice for the young people of the shire and get their wants and needs across.”
Yarrawonga’s Jordan Ibbott is looking forward to working on the youth council and assisting to get the young residents of Moira Shire’s voice across.
Moira Shire Council chair administrator Graeme Emonson said the Youth Council would be an invaluable link between young people and the council.
“These 10 people have shown they are passionate about providing a voice for young people,” Dr Emonson said.
“They are committed to advocate for key issues facing our young people, helping to identify priorities for youth engagement and driving projects that are important for the next generation.
“This is a unique opportunity for young people to gain a range of new skills and develop their leadership capabilities, all while helping to improve outcomes for youth in the Shire.
“Council is excited to see the positive impact these young leaders will have in the Shire and is looking forward to what they can achieve over the next couple of years.”
