Many from the community put their hand up to be involved with the inaugural ceremony, including representatives from St Mary’s Primary School Echuca and Twin Rivers Specialist School Echuca, who stood next to the new Woolworths team during the ceremony and Uncle Rick Ronnan, who performed a Welcome to Country.
The store opened half an hour earlier than was planned as the speeches and ceremony were completed quicker than expected.
Store manager Megg Savage said it was a huge relief to be finally open after investing a substantial amount of time and effort towards seeing the store develop.
“I’m just proud, I cannot be prouder than today,” she said.
“It’s been 140 days since I got my first interview to today ... it’s been exhilarating, it’s been sad, it’s been happy.
“So far, everyone loves it. It’s beautiful, it’s clean, it’s fresh, it’s full, the team are great and the customers I have spoken to are so thankful to have something over this side of town.”
Woolworths has donated 1000 sausages and 1000 pieces of bread plus sauce and onions to local CFA members who will be holding a barbecue in the new Woolies’ car park on Saturday, December 17.
The CFA will keep any money made from the sales.
