Local ecologist Dr John Conallin is working with the Yanco Creek and Tributaries Advisory Council (YACTAC) on the project, as part of the Refreshing Rivers Program.
In collecting feedback, Dr Conallin recently visited Conargo Public School to gain the students’ perspectives.
The creek flows directly behind the school, and he said their thoughts on the creek, its uses and any ideas or improvements for the future would be woven into the study.
Dr Conallin also took time to speak to the students about fish re-stocking programs taking place across the region, and in particular the Deniliquin Lagoons Restoration Project which specifically engages Deniliquin High School students.
He also spoke of his time working overseas, studying fish as a food source.
Conargo School relieving principal Kylie Charlton said the children were very engaged with Dr Conallin, and were eager to continue learning more on the subject.
She said the school is planning future activities based on the childrens’ interests resulting from the visit.
It will include adding a fish tank with rare fish to the classroom, water monitoring of the creek, and researching wildlife, plants and pests along the creek.
Mrs Charlton said as the school’s plans continue, they hope to have Deni High students involved in the lagoons project come and speak to the students.
She said the hope is to spark more interest in the rehabilitation and maintenance of the local wetland areas in the children.
