Vastly experienced Police Sergeant Gary Lewis has taken over the top job at Mulwala and is keen to have a community-focused policy.
As OIC of Corowa Police Station since 2018, Sergeant Lewis has relieved as Mulwala’s sergeant over the last 12 months, but as from November 14, has been confirmed in the role.
“Local police have always had a strong focus on the community, and we hope to build on that focus” he said. A current example of that focus is the community garden next door to the police station proposed by Sergeant Lewis (see separate story).
“That includes making police more visible in the community, me personally making an effort to attend more community functions and listening to the needs of the community.”
In a career spanning over 34 years, Sergeant Lewis’s time in the region began at Berrigan in 1997 where he was Senior Constable. He was Sergeant at Finley from 2004 to 2012 and Sergeant at Albury for six years. Beforehand, Sergeant Lewis worked at Tumbarumba, Ivanhoe and Broken Hill.
Sgt. Lewis joins long time member, Senior Constable Rod Franklin and recent arrivals SCs Kyle Jackson and Nicolas Gonazalez in serving the local Mulwala community.
