Bringing landscape to life

Both Judith and Kerry showcase their individual pieces throughout the exhibition and their work reflects the Australian landscape, from our local scenes to faraway places.

Each artist habitually references the natural world in their work — particularly the ocean, clouds, trees, leaves and birds. Both are innovators who love experimenting with new processes and pushing the envelope with familiar techniques.

‘‘I was invited by the Foundry to exhibit here, which was excessively exciting,’’ Judith said.

‘‘Because this was a big space I invited Kerry to join me.

‘‘Kerry’s pieces are all the framed work and mine are all the mad other bits.

‘‘Quite a lot of my work is sea-themed and that’s because both my children live by the sea in the tropics.

‘‘But the ones not tropical-themed are based around here. That’s why you will see dry rivers and gum leaves.’’

Expect to see layers of fabric and fibre from Judith Roberts; her artworks are enriched and embellished with free motion machine embroidery, found objects and hand stitching. She will also be exhibiting her exploration of the vessel in many shapes and sizes and the ethereal beauty of her buttonhole stitch webs.

Kerry Handwerk specialises in printing on fabric, using linocut blocks or leaves preserved in glycerine. Her hand-embroidered pieces, some densely stitched with colonial knots, and her delightful whimsical 3D works buttonhole-stitched with bright silk threads will also be on display.

Opening last Friday the show will conclude on Sunday, March 31, with the official opening afternoon taking place on Saturday, March 23 at 2pm.

The Foundry Arts Space is open from 10am-4pm, Wednesday through to Monday.
