As part of its growth strategy into regional Victoria, BMD Urban’s first project win in 2024 involves tripling the size of the Arcadia Native Fish Hatchery, south of Shepparton.

This significant upgrade will enhance the facility’s capacity for recreational fish stocking, supporting the long-term sustainability of native fish populations.
The expansion will increase the number of broodstock, plankton and reuse ponds from 33 to more than 100.
It will also include the construction of a new harvesting station and an extension to the existing hatchery building.
As a BMD Group company, BMD Urban draws on 45 years of experience as a specialist civil contractor.
This expertise enables the team to deliver innovative solutions tailored to the needs of the Goulburn and Murray valleys and the Riverina region of NSW.
The company is engaging local specialists to deliver key components of the native fish hatchery project, including pump stations, concrete works, mechanical and electrical works.

BMD Urban regional operations manager Greg Stevens, who has lived in Shepparton since childhood, outlined the company’s strategy to give back to the local community through this project.
“Construction of the fish hatchery expansion began in late 2024 and is expected to be completed in mid-2025,” he said.
“During this time, BMD Urban is prioritising meaningful engagement with the region.
“Our long-term commitment to the area is underpinned by BMD’s philosophy of engaging local resources and supporting the communities in which we operate.”
Greg said in terms of Shepparton, BMD Urban is looking at extra employment opportunities in the area.
“We’re exploring employment opportunities for local workers with disability support service provider ConnectGV, and we’ve also connected with the Rumbalara Football Netball Club, to explore career pathways for young Aboriginal people in construction,” he said.
“By supporting local workforce development, we strengthen our team while contributing to industry growth and sustainability.
“Reinforcing our commitment to regional development, BMD Urban is also a proud sponsor of the Infrastructure Network Goulburn Valley (IN-GV), further strengthening our support for local industries and workforce growth.
“With a growing presence across northern Victoria and southern NSW, BMD Urban is actively seeking skilled local professionals to join our expanding regional team.”
As the Arcadia Native Fish Hatchery project progresses and BMD Urban continues to secure water, transport and renewable energy infrastructure projects across the region, the company’s investment in both infrastructure and community partnerships is expected to leave an enduring legacy — supporting economic growth and career opportunities across the region.
