While visitors are welcome to sight-see at Lake Eildon, Goulburn-Murray Water is reminding the public to avoid swimming or any other recreational activity that includes contact with the water.
G-MW water quality co-ordinator Bianca Atley said high levels of blue-green algae were first detected in July.
“BGA are very small and are present at high level at Lake Eildon. In many cases, there is no obvious change to the colour of water,” Ms Atley said.
“G-MW samples widespread locations and can confirm all areas of Lake Eildon are affected.
“BGA is not only in the shallow parts of the lake, the deeper water and the main arm is also affected.
“We understand the high value of this iconic, tourist destination and share the disappointment of water users to learn BGA levels remain high.
“It is not known when the warning will be removed but unlikely it will be before the new year.”
Blue-green algae warnings have been in place since July, with G-MW undertaking regular monitoring of the sites.
Blue-green algae contains toxins which cause skin rashes, itchiness and soreness, and if swallowed can cause nausea and vomiting.
