Community members have been invited to have their say in shaping the future of biosecurity in NSW, with the release of a discussion paper seeking public comment on the statutory review of the Biosecurity Act 2015.
NSW Department of Primary Industries deputy director general biosecurity John Tracey said the five-yearly review would ensure the act, which commenced in July 2017, continues to provide a strong and secure protective framework.
“The Biosecurity Act provides a proportionate and risk-based approach to managing biosecurity concerns, be it in an emergency or for longer-term management issues in New South Wales,” Dr Tracey said.
“The introduction of the act was designed to streamline the state’s response to biosecurity risks, provide greater flexibility and reduce red tape.
“This review is to ensure it continues to be relevant and effective in achieving those objectives and that’s why we’re seeking feedback from the community and stakeholders.”
In 2022 the NSW Government invested $229 million in biosecurity measures – the biggest investment by a single jurisdiction in pest and disease control in Australia.
“I invite our communities to become involved as we work together to protect our local environments and economies and ensure our $23.1 billion primary industries sector continues to thrive,” Dr Tracey said.
The discussion paper will be open for comment until February 10, 2023. For more information and to have your say, go to www.nsw.gov.au/have-your-say/statutory-review-of-biosecurity-act.
