Members of Deniliquin’s University of the Third Age (U3A) came together last week for a Christmas gathering, and to celebrate another successful year of learning.

The group had a big year, with 145 financial members attending a variety of classes each term.
Members were also involved with a number of special programs.
“This year we were involved with Edward River Council for Seniors Week funding, and there were three events as well as a movie screening,” U3A publicity officer Gayle Beckton said.
“As the 2023 Seniors Week theme was ‘Be Active’ we held three separate activities - tai chi, line dancing and light exercises, which were all well received.
“The movie Mrs Harris Goes to Paris was a great success with over 100 people attending. Thank you to Edward River Council for their assistance.”
In April, Deniliquin U3A also had the privilege of hosting the annual NSW U3A Conference.
“It was a most successful event and a first for Deniliquin, attracting quite a few visitors and was an opportunity to showcase our local organisation and town,” Mrs Beckton said.
“Then in May we received funding through Edward River Council for the ‘Deni Has Talent Concert’ in partnership with South West Music.
“This was a hugely successful evening and hopefully this could become a regular event.”
U3A also assisted Murrumbidgee Local Health District, partnering to host a ‘Dying To Know Day” in August, where the guest speakers spoke on palliative care, enduring guardianship, advanced care and preparing a will.
More than 80 people attended this event.
And in October 2023, geologist Tony Yeates - a member of Northern Rivers U3A - gave a public talk at the newly renovated Deniliquin Town Hall on the discovery of the ancient meteorite impact structure beneath Deniliquin.
“This was a very successful event which was run in conjunction with Edward River Council, with more than 100 people attending this free event.”
Last week’s lunch followed the Deniliquin U3A annual general meeting at the Deniliquin RSL Club, with entertainment was provided by the U3A Deniliquin choir.
