The retreat took place on the weekend of March 18 and 19 at Benalla Racing Club.
Goulburn Murray Community Leadership executive officer Nathan Bibby said the Fairley Leadership Program was its flagship program, designed to build individual leadership capacity and educate emerging leaders about the challenges and opportunities impacting on the Goulburn Murray region.
“With this program, we’re looking to create more leaders who are able to explore regional priorities and contribute positively to the Goulburn Murray Region,” Mr Bibby said.
The retreat aims to deliver key information on the importance of community leadership with speakers from local communities contributing their experiences and stories.
Regional Leadership Victoria leader in residence Chris Kotur prepared an address to the cohort on her experiences with community leadership, while Dr Sarah Birrell Ivory had a conversation with the cohort regarding critical thinking to identify emerging issues and how to navigate resistors to change.
“We’re excited to visit local communities, gaining greater insight into the everyday issues and concerns of our community,” Fairley Leadership Program facilitator Vicki Scott said.
The Fairley Leadership opening retreat is designed to facilitate strong friendships and bonds among its cohort, so they can initiate change as a team once they graduate from the program.
Activities such as The Great Benalla Race — Scavenger Hunt encouraged the cohort to work as a team in achieving a common goal, while learning more about the local area.
The Fairley Leadership cohort also received marketing and communications training from Echuca-based marketing agency J2 Content Creation.
The workshop is designed for community leaders to utilise social media tools to increase engagement with the community, and how to share their community leadership journey.
