The man from Techies Tyres — Francis (Techy) Ryan — Monique and Ricky Walsh and former Kyabramite Jason Sleeth have a small share in the galloper that upset Victoria’s best known racehorse Mr Brightside in the $750,000 C.F Orr Stakes.
The winner’s share was a cool $460,000.
Techy said it was a long story about how he and the other Kyabram connections ended up with a share in the galloper, but he’s glad it happened.
And Traps has been told Techy also landed a really responsible part-time job in what has proved a big week.
Not a list you would like to be in
Shepparton came in ninth in a list of Victorian towns and suburbs where call-outs have been received to remove children in locked cars in stifling conditions.
Stats have revealed Shepparton has had 16 instances in which emergency services have been called to get children out of locked cars so far this summer.
Hoppers Crossing heads the list with 26, followed by Frankston (22), Pakenham (21) and Narre Warren (20).
Warnambool and Wodonga, both with 12, are the only other country towns that has made the list of 12 to have the dubious honour.
Last week, Ambulance Victoria had received 230 calls of children locked in cars, four having to be rushed to hospital in life and death situations.
One fatal case occurred at Mooroopna late last year when a boy who had been playing hide and seek in soaring temperatures got trapped in a car boot and could not be saved.
Stats reveal that in 58 per cent of cases the child in the car is younger than three years.
Dry times
Kyabram’s mini drought is continuing.
Since January 14 only 0.2mm has been registered at the Kyabram weather station.
And only 18mm has been recorded so far this year.
It has also been hot.
Last Friday, the temperature peaked at 40.4ºC after a run of six days with maximums well in the 30s.
Grandstand gone
Unknown persons have caused a quandary at Mooropna’s recreation reserve, burning a quaint heritage-listed grandstand — luckily though not to the ground which has given hope that it could be restored.
The sturdy wooden stand was built in the early 1900s and was used as a grandstand for the local race club which had a track in that area at that time.
It has been moved a couple of times and footy and cricket fans have used the stand – known as the Ted Davis Stand – for many years.
Mooroopna Football Club president Bill Downing described the stand as being ‘‘a charming glimpse into years gone past’’.
Watering issue
Once – fair enough.
Twice – really frustrating.
Three times – unacceptable.
But that’s what Kyabram Cricket Club’s female cricketers have encountered three times this season when they turned up for a pennant games only to find a wet turf wicket at the Kyabram Recreation Reserve.
It has created a lot of phone calls to get an alternative venue, but those responsible for the upkeep of the Kyabram Recreation Reserve need to avoid it happening again.
Store closure
Deniliquin’s Rivers store is among those earmarked for closer after a recent announcement Rivers will close its stores.
Other Rivers stores throughout the region will be following suit after an unsuccessful bid to sell the business.
About 650 employees will be affected by the closure.
Nathan to be missed
The recent tragic death of Bamawm man Nathan Taylor has been felt near and far.
Nathan, 23, had associations with the Bamawm Extension Fire Brigade, Echuca Fire Brigade, Echuca United Football Netball Club and Echuca South Cricket Club.
He made history as Bamawm Extension’s first participant in the Melbourne Stair Climb last year when he was placed in the top 10.
Nathan’s body was recovered from the Murray River on January 16 after being declared missing two days earlier.
Square dinkum
G’day
Went to the picture theatre last Friday night.
We sat in our seats just as the theatre darkened in readiness for the movie. As the screen lit up with the opening scene, it became quite obvious that there was no sound. This unexpected silence continued for about 10 seconds when, out of the darkness, a male voice yelled out, ‘‘Okay, who’s got the remote?’’
Hooroo!!!
