He takes over the role from Chrissy Weller, who spent the entire COVID-19 period in the mayor role after taking over from Adrian Weston in 2020.
Cr Amos is a financial planning expert who operates a mortgage broking business in Echuca.
The 52-year-old has lived in Echuca since 2015 with his wife of the past 25 years, Inger, and 17-year-old daughter Charlee, who is at Moama Anglican Grammar School.
His new local government role adds to his officer duties with Echuca Fire Brigade officer, which he has maintained since being voted onto council at the 2020 election.
The former Westpac banker, who was a 10-year member of the Australian Army Reserve, not only has a solid understanding of all things financial but also has a strong connection to the Indigenous community.
He grew up just outside Moree in northern New South Wales and spent time with his missionary parents in Arnhem Land on a remote Elcho Island.
He and his brothers were among only a handful of white students that attended the island’s primary school.
He spent six years in Darwin, where his mother became an ordained minister and then finished his secondary schooling at Robinvale before attending college at the renowned Hamilton College.
Cr Amos will continue to have the support of Cr Colleen Gates, who was re-elected as Deputy Mayor, with both appointments for one-year terms.
Cr Amos thanked outgoing Mayor, Cr Chrissy Weller, for her leadership to the council team across the past two years, particularly given the ongoing challenges of COVID and the more recent flood emergency.
“Our key focus will be supporting the community as we work our way through this flood event. We are experiencing the worst flood in more than 50-plus years, which has devastated many areas across our shire, and we must all work together and support our communities as we begin the long journey towards recovery.”
“We need to harness the strength, community spirit and pride we have in our community,” he said.
