Moira Shire Mayor Libro Mustica said the opening of the trail was the culmination of a great team effort and would benefit visitors and locals alike.
“This trail is the first stage in the large Murray River adventure trail, designed to invite a whole new population to experience and appreciate the Murray River environs,” he said.
“The trail connects from the Murray Valley Hwy to the magnificent Murray River where you will be able to walk and cycle through beautiful river red gum state forests.”
Funding of $618,000 was provided by the Federal Government under the Murray-Darling Basin Economic Development Program. The total cost of the build was more than $1.27 million.
“These initial works include 13.5km of sealed cycling/walking tracks constructed along the Murray Valley Hwy, heading west of Yarrawonga to Burramine,” Cr Mustica said.
He said the various tourism businesses along the trail and neighbouring towns would see a “flow-on boost to the economy and employment”.
“In addition, the already existing road and trail networks within the Murray River Park have been highlighted and promoted with signage installed at various key points.’’
Burramine farmer Leo Kelly played a significant role in the development by leasing Moira Shire Council some of his land to help complete the project.
“I want to personally thank him for his fantastic contribution,” Cr Mustica said.
