St Patrick’s Day is a religious and cultural holiday, as well as a celebration for the people of Ireland on the day of their countries' patron saints' death.
With strong familial ties to the country of Ireland itself, through the first fleet and other efforts to colonise the country, Aussies do really enjoy being able to celebrate the holiday of some of their forebears.
Dressed in green, students at Deni High were keen to get themselves stuck into the festivities of the special day.
But this was not the only thing on the school community’s mind when celebrating.
They were also motivated by a cause close to their own hearts - supporting a former DHS community member.
Former staff member Maurice O’Connor, who taught at the school until 2023, was recently diagnosed with a brain tumour.
The school used the special day to send him some strength and well wishes.
This gesture was just a small insight into the tight-knit community that is Deni High, hopefully, it will lift Mr O’Connor’s spirits during this hard time.
Deni High teacher Donna Van Leishout was happy with how the day went and how the schools students and staff got behind it.
“It was a well-supported day, our staff and our students all made the effort to wear green on the day.
“So, with the news of Mr O’Connor and his health journey, we thought best to get a message to him during this difficult time.
“A lot of our students have some really fond memories of Mr O’Connor, particularly those in Years 10, 11 and 12 who knew him when he was at the school.”
