Greenham general manager operations Tom Maguire said recent factors such as the impact of coronavirus on meat markets across the globe and the exit of many dairy farms in the region have caused the export manufacturing beef business at Tongala to become uncompetitive.
“With a heavy heart, we announce the closure of the current cow processing facility at Greenham Tongala. This has unfortunately resulted in some job losses,” he said.
“We are doing everything we can to provide support and assistance to our people in this time, including offering relocations to our Smithton and Moe facilities.
“We know a bright future lies ahead for Greenham Tongala, and we are currently considering all options for the site.”
Eighty-five people remain employed at Greenham Tongala as of publication.
