While the official event was postponed until March 2022, David was given granted approval to do an impromptu ride from October 14 – 21, with a number of mates from across the region joining him throughout the trek.
“I was in a bit of a mental lull on the last day but Matt Kean and Robbo (Lyndon Robertson) helped me out of it and I was happy to finish on a high,” David said.
“A massive thankyou to the following: firstly Matt Kean. You’re an inspiration and a gentleman. It’s been a pleasure to ride with you.
“To the sponsors Jack Schilg - Docs Cafe Corowa, Paul McFadyen - SST Trimble, also thankyou Paul for the bed in Jerilderie.
“Thanks to Matt Hogan and his lovely wife Mel and kids Emmy and Ava for the bed to sleep in when staying in Albury.
“To all the riders, Roger Fielder, Matt Kean, Matt Hogan, Craig Sloper, Lyndon Robertson, the CRABS (Corowa Rutherglen Amateur Bicyclists). Your company and wheels have been exceptional.
“A big thanks to Bianca Hogan for moving gear from Jerilderie to Corowa and to all those who donated, shared posts and kept encouraging riders along the way.
“Mostly a massive thankyou to my lovely wife Sal Daly and my kids for the support and understanding plus, the extra motivation to get my skin checked and keep protected. “Stay safe everyone and please donate!”
David decided to complete the over 1000km ride visiting schools and sporting groups to spread the message, “prevention is better than a cure” due to coming across many people in his work going through the fight of their life from cancer that originated as melanoma.
“It’s pretty heartbreaking seeing patients in palliative care because of melanoma,” David told the Free Press.
“It tears families apart and having a young family myself, I know that it could be anyone.”
At the time of the Free Press going to print David had raised over $4000.
