King George V was on the throne and Billy Hughes was Prime Minister of Australia.
It was when she was in her 20s that Doreen came to the Riverina district, and Deniliquin.
While she moved on again about a decade later, Doreen’s ties to the Deniliquin area remained through her daughter Geraldine King.
Doreen married Roy Burns in 1942, and Geraldine was born later that year.
Three years into their marriage, Deniliquin became their home.
Roy was originally sent to the Northern Territory as a civilian serviceman following the bombing of Darwin. When he returned, they moved to the Riverina.
Doreen worked on sheep stations around Tocumwal as a domestic and also as station cook at Juanbung Station, Oxley before settling in Deniliquin.
While in Deniliquin they lived west end of Harfleur Street, while Geraldine attended St Michael’s School.
Doreen worked as an office cleaner and a waitress at Kondos Cafe.
Doreen and Roy moved to Victoria in 1959, leaving Geraldine in Deniliquin after her marriage to Paul King.
Paul and Geraldine were among the guests who travelled to Bacchus Marsh to enjoy celebrating Doreen's 100th, held at The Plough in Myrniong. Family also attended from Tasmania, Albury, Queensland and the Northern Territory.
Granddaughter Julie Pemberton said Doreen’s charm and humour was on show during the celebrations.
“She can still be very witty and has told us, with a chuckle, she doesn't think she will make another 100,” Julie said.
