Mary Doyle 'made history' swearing oath to King Charles

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese congratulated Ms Doyle in Question Time on Tuesday, after she was sworn in to parliament.

"Last month Mary Doyle made history, and today Mary Doyle made history ... being the first person to swear allegiance to King Charles," he said.

"(It is) the first time that a government candidate has won a seat from the opposition in over 100 years."

Mr Albanese said Ms Doyle "achieved an outstanding result".

"She went much better than expectations could possibly have been planned for," he said.

"She did that because of who she is."

The government now has 78 seats out of 151 in the lower house following the by-election victory.
