Cameron Robert Hunt, 45, was charged after a home at Geham, north of Toowoomba, went up in flames just before 3am on Tuesday.
A body was later found inside the property, but police are yet to make a formal identification as forensic testing is still under way.
However, a Queensland Police spokesman confirmed a woman who lived at the house was missing.
Police revealed that two children who lived at the home were "safe and well" after the blaze.
"There was no hospitalisation of the children and all I could say at this point in time, (is) they are young children within that house," Superintendent George Marchesini told reporters on Tuesday afternoon.
Hunt's matter was mentioned at Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where he was excused from appearing, and he remains at the watch house.
His Legal Aid lawyer requested that the case be adjourned for three months to allow the prosecution to prepare its brief of evidence.
Police prosecutor Chris Willson concurred telling the magistrate he "would appreciate the extra time given the significant nature of the offences".
The matter was adjourned until July 16 with the brief of evidence due a fortnight earlier.
