The Victorian Government is running a consultation study on the impact of wind farms on Victoria’s population of endangered brolgas.
The government is finalising an update to a set of standards designed to protect brolgas from potential harm caused by wind farms, released in 2011.
Opponents of wind farms say that there is a risk of collision with the wind turbines and disruption to the habitat of the cranes native to Australia.
By October the government has promised to complete targeted research to fill gaps in understanding of the impacts of wind energy on at-risk bird and bat species and inform development of standards and mitigation measures.
This program is designed to improve understanding of mortality rates across Victoria and mortality risk factors from collisions with turbines, identify characteristics of wetlands and their suitability for brolga breeding sites, and bring together learning from international research, experience and best practice to assess risk and manage biodiversity impacts.
