Showcasing what Rotary does for the community, the night also promoted leadership.
Shepparton Rotary president Joseph Tam said engaging younger people was a very important part of Rotary.
“We like to keep the Rotary spirit going, so we need to have new blood, new ideas to keep our club young, rejuvenated,” he said.
“We'd like to make them feel welcome and appreciate we are ordinary people with the same objective to serve our community.”
Dr Tam said the younger generation had a different, larger social network to most of those currently involved in Rotary and that this would bring a fresh perspective to Rotary.
“It's important to include people from all walks of life, different ages, different backgrounds, so we can reach sort of a mix of membership and therefore we have diversified ideas and you really benefit every group of the community,” he said.
Special guest for the evening, City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Kim O'Keeffe, said engaging young Sheppartonians with service clubs like Rotary was very important.
“They get to hear some of the great things they do, but it also gives them the opportunity perhaps to think about how they can contribute in a different way,” she said.
“Youth will always bring fresh eyes.”
