Founded by support co-ordinators Belinda Chestnut and Charmaine Bourke, Inspired Abilities’ new office has been dubbed a “home away from home”.
The facility features pastel-painted walls, cosy bean bags, fluffy quilts and a TV setup with a console. It is designed to offer a comforting space where community members can relax, unwind and connect with others.
A blackboard message that reads, “Believe in yourself. You are enough” adds a personal touch, reflecting the founders’ intent to provide a welcoming refuge for both participants and the community.
“We wanted to offer something different that Benalla doesn’t have,” Charmaine said.
Belinda echoed this sentiment.
“You know, sometimes life can be a little bit isolating, especially in a small town,” she said.
“We wanted a space where people could come if they’re down the street and feeling anxious,” Charmaine said.
“They could come in, have a cuppa, have a chat, or even just sit down, watch a bit of TV, somewhere that’s calming, relaxing.”
“A space where they can meet, build friendships, connect with the community, other community members,” Belinda added.
“It’s hard to find spaces where (community members) can meet people and build friendships.”
Charmaine and Belinda, who each have over 20 years of experience in disability and mental health support, also aim to break down barriers between service providers and those they serve.
They describe Inspired Abilities as a place where individuals with disabilities and mental health challenges could find a sense of belonging and connection.
“We also wanted to remove ‘them and us’,” Charmaine said, emphasising their desire to create a non-clinical, non-corporate space without the usual reception desks.
‘Doing with, not for’ is Inspired Abilities’ motto, and aptly sums up how the founders hope to help community members forge new connections.
