Sam was the inaugural winner of the senior Mr Nathalia competition, run on the arena of the Nathalia Show on Saturday, just after Miss Showgirl was sashed.
While many regional shows have ditched the traditional Miss Showgirl quests, Nathalia, never a town to bow to modern whims, has kept the tiny tot and showgirl competitions and added a couple of unique ones of its own.
Sam estimates he has had his mullet since he left school about five years ago and he admits a few friends have teased him and told him to cut it off.
For those born in the past 30 years, the mullet is a hair cut described as “business in the front and party at the back”, made fashionable for a short time in the 1980s and worn by celebrities like Billy Ray Cyrus and Charlie Sheen.
Tate Butler, 7, won the junior mullet competition, and Tom Baker took home the ‘Mr Nathalia: Facial hair’ competition.
The Mr Nathalia competition was developed by show secretary Ellen Morcombe, who noticed the mullet appearing at a deb ball she attended.
She asked one of the boys what they will think when they look back at the photos in future years, and they replied: “pretty cool!”.
So, in the interests of engaging more young people in the show, she put together the competition.
