Fairley Leadership Program participants delved into agriculture on Wednesday, April 6, hearing from the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, Goulburn Valley Water, Goulburn-Murray Water, land developers and Kilter Rural.
They also visited Plunkett Orchards at Ardmona. The fourth generation fruit growing business is adopting new technologies to grow and pack for export and the domestic market.
Kilter Rural water manager Matthew Bryant said he provided a discussion on how large organisations were trying to be smart with water.
He spoke about water supply risks and what farm practices can be implemented to optimise water outcomes.
“What’s important is to understand what the gross margin per megalitre is for crop, so you can plan better going forward and participate better in the market, being able to acquire water knowing that you can acquire water, which may not be the lowest, but will still return a profit.”
The group of about 20 participants was hosted by Goulburn-Murray Water at Tatura.
