Microgrids are small-scale electricity systems that coordinate rooftop solar panels, battery storages and other energy sources normally isolated to a single property.
It is hoped microgrids will be an alternative to diesel generation in rural Australia.
Australian Renewable Energy Agency chief executive Darren Miller said there would be a feasibility study in very state.
“Microgrids provide an exciting opportunity to integrate renewables into regional communities,” Mr Miller said.
“Whether it’s maintaining electricity supply during and after emergencies such as bushfires and floods, or improving the reliability and security of power supply in remote communities, this program will showcase the diverse benefits microgrids offer.”
The $50 million Regional Australia Microgrid Pilots Program was launched on September 24 by ARENA on behalf of the Federal Government.
NSW Farmers said the investment would boost on-farm renewable efforts.
NSW Farmers business committee chair Bill McDonnell said the $50 million was a welcome move as it gives individual farmers the ability to set up local generation for local use.
“The microgrid strategy certainly fits with NSW Farmers’ stance on increasing electricity reliability and potentially affordability,” Mr McDonnell said.
