Our feature trophy this issue was taken by David Fenton in Western Victoria in 2023. The magnificent fallow buck scored 262 1/8 Douglas Points and took first place in the ADA’s coveted Fraser McLay Competition for the year.
As reported elsewhere in this magazine, David was presented with his trophy at the South-East Branch’s Fiftieth Anniversary Dinner held in October. Congratulations on taking such a great trophy buck David!
The ADA’s Top 50 Fallow Deer listing makes interesting reading, particularly since it highlights the high quality of trophies taken in recent years. To make the Top 50 these days a trophy score of at least 250 is required and to displace the current Number 1 a score north of 280 Douglas Points is required – quite a contrast to just a few years ago when a score of 220 was considered a bench-mark animal. David’s trophy takes fourteenth place in the ADA list.
Fallow deer are now widespread in southeastern Australia, which is reflected in the origins of those listed: 17 from South Australia, 14 from both Tasmania and New South Wales, four from Victoria and one from Queensland.
Correction
In the winter edition of this magazine (Vol. 49, No. 2) we reported that ADA’s Gary Pearce had taken a trophy buck that came second in Fallow Deer Section of the National Trophy Competition with a head scoring 237 7/8 Douglas Points. Gary was reported to be an East Gippsland Branch member when he is, in fact, a Northern Tasmanian Branch member and took his buck-of-a-lifetime in his home state, the original home of the species in Australia. Gary, please accept our apologies for this error!
