Vegemite smell a part of our heritage

The factory is owned by Bega Cheese but is being sold with a lease back provision.

The National Trust said the smell was an excellent example of “intangible cultural heritage“ and allows the purpose of the building to be understood.

“There are numerous examples internationally of efforts to recognise and protect significant aspects of places and cultural landscape, such as sounds and smells,” it said.

The planning authorities agreed to mention the smell in the site’s heritage statement, but stopped short of any requirement that future owners of the site had to have regard for the distinctive smell.
